The anticipated start date of the quilting program will commence January 2026. It will be a once a month class that will be held on Friday mornings at the Main Library downtown for 2 hours. The exact Friday still needs to be buttoned down, but I'm looking at it being the 3rd Friday of the month. (I will also check with my branch manager to see if kitting times can be accommodated for members to help out in-person!)
I have three different quilt blocks that will be the primary focus for the program: Pinwheel, New Mexico Star, and Hot Air Balloon. All the blocks will be 12.5x12.5 (12x12 finished). I am also encouraging all participants to submit their own 12.5x12.5 block that is not one of the core three if they desire, which will also be added to the community quilt project that will act as a capstone art installation.
Participants can either assemble their quilt blocks here during the program hours, or take a kit home and return their finished block to the library. When NMQA members are helping cut/assemble kits I am giving full creative autonomy when it comes to colors. Color theme can be wild, varied, and expressive, just like the quirkiness and eclectic aesthetic of the Albuquerque community! I want the community quilt to explode with variety and wild abandon.
