"Improv is a great way to give yourself permission to play with no rules and no patterns.” – Cindy Grisdela
Learn to create your own original quilts with no pattern using improvisational piecing techniques. Students will learn to let go of the ‘rules’ and piece blocks in an intuitive, free form fashion. Students in this class will explore contemporary improve blocks, improve circles, and angled stripes; plus insets and curved strips. Strips and scraps will be used to add interest and make your design your own. There is no measuring or precise cutting and each quilt will be unique.
Color choices and simple design principles will be discussed to help create an original dynamic composition.
This class is best for intermediate to advanced quilters ready to take the next step to create an original design.
Cindy is a fiber artist, teacher and author from Reston, Virginia. Color and texture are the driving forces behind her contemporary art quilts. She combines line and shape with stitching to create texture and dimension—a process she describes as painting with fabric and thread. Her abstract quilts are designed improvisationally without a pattern—“a little bit like jazz music.” She feels that each decision about color and shape influence the next. And that complex blocks repeat like beats of a melody. Irregular plain areas of the quilts provide a resting place for the eye. Her new book, Artful Improv: Explore Color Recipes, Building Blocks and Free Motion Quilting, was published in 2016.
